Van Gogh’s painting entitled “Old Peasant”, and the art print subject for this one-of-a-kind puzzle, was painted in 1888. It depicts an older Mediterranean peasant, who was a man of the sun as well as the earth, and it is a compelling image of a man who’s eyes say much, as do his masterfully drawn hands, that convey the rugged strength of a hard working man of the fields. This painting is considered by many art critics, to have been the last realistic portrait of a peasant in the tradition of Western painting; and arguably; the finest of a peasant. In spite of this painting being a part of the private art collection of Stavros S. Niarchos, (1909-1996) who was a very well known and highly successful Greek shipping tycoon; this painting is quite well known, and considered to have been one of Van Gogh’s finest paintings.
